Nritya was established in Kansas City in 1988 by Mrs.Hema Sharma
at the insistence of several community members who wanted her to promote
classical Indian dance in Kansas City. The first dance school to be established
in Kansas City, Nritya has come a long way in promoting the arts and culture of
India through the Midwest. In the Greater Kansas City area, Nritya is a
recognized name in the Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment commission, the Nelson-Atkins
Gallery, the Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley, and Kansas City Missouri School
Districts, the India Association of Kansas City, and the Gujarati Samaj.
The school has also performed for numerous other organizations including the
IRS, Sprint, and AT&T. The school has expanded to currently include branches
in Emporia, Topeka, & Wichita, KS and Ames & Des Moines, IA.
The success of Nritya can be attributed to one woman, Mrs. Hema Sharma. Hema has
worked tirelessly over the past 18 years to establish the Indian community as a
strong constructive ethnic presence in Kansas City. She has been Ethnic
Commissioner from India on the Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment Commission for 11
years and especially enjoys teaching the younger generation of Kansas City
about India. Within the dance school, she holds annual summer workshops for
8-10 days and regularly holds free concerts wherever she teaches to showcase
the talent and accomplishment of her students. Nritya is currently looking
forward to celebrating her 18th anniversary in October of 2005.
